Comhaltas Correspondence No. 11

The Buanchoiste wishes to avail of this opportunity to express our appreciation to all those who have communicated with us during these weeks of crisis. This has been a great source of encouragement for us. While we could not respond individually to each of you, please be assured that your views are given every consideration. We have been very impressed by the resilience which is being displayed by our units, officers and members. Among other things, this is so evident in the many online initiatives across the island and also in Branches abroad. What started as a trickle has now become a strong current which is a credit to all concerned. Well done.

  • Kerry County Board has updated us on their project. School teacher County Secretary Karen Trench says: ‘We are very pleased with the success of our video recording and uploading project. John Stack plans to have all videos uploaded to Kerry CCÉ facebook page and YouTube by April 30th. To date, the total number of videos received is 249, the total number of people reached is 278,636 and the views on all uploaded videos is 113,005.’

  • Kell Chole of the Murphy Roche branch of Comhaltas in Chicago reports that they have been hosting two online opportunities each week as part of their newly created e-learning programme. ‘We host learning sessions on the Zoom platform’, Kell tells us, ‘These are well attended and, knowing we’re all starving for playing music with friends, these are open to the general public.’

  • COMHALTAS LIVE is the daily 20-minute programme, accessible to all free of charge, on the Comhaltas website featuring the best of Irish music, song and dance. Each programme has a varied content of Fleadh competitions, concerts and sessions, under the expert stewardship of Willie Fogarty.

  • The Cois na hAbhna Regional Archive, located in Ennis, Co. Clare, is a Comhaltas resource centre with a library of Irish traditional music, song, dance and folklore relating to the Meitheal region of Galway, Clare, Limerick and Kerry. It contains high quality videos available at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRTFCxvjI86NDDTaNonHSkw.
